Question: How do Amish relationships work?

The Amish do not like to depend on outsiders, so neighbors are always helping each other. Unmarried Amish choose their own husbands/wives, and the woman is very much involved in the process. Courtship often begins with a young man transporting a young woman to and from one of the many singings or Sunday worship.

Can an Amish person date an outsider?

Marriage in the Amish community is seen as a passage into adulthood. Outsiders, non-Amish, or English, as they call the rest of the world, are not permitted to marry within the Amish community.

Do Amish people date their family?

Amish couples are expected to remain married to the mates they select as young adults. Despite the fact that mate choice is limited to other church members, the young people do not necessarily choose to marry close relatives.
